Hyde County is more water than land — of its 1,459 square miles, better than half is sound, marsh, canal and one very large lake. That geography is why a shallow, food-rich shoreline around what is now Lake Mattamuskeet supported a settled Native American community long before any English precinct existed here, and why the water itself, not a town or a highway, has always been the thing this county is organized around.
